When should you order ice melt?
October. November at the latest.
Not when the forecast says ice. By then you are calling six suppliers and taking whatever is left.
Ice melt does not expire if you keep it dry and sealed. Buying early costs you a pallet of storage space. Buying late costs you a closed building and a slip-and-fall claim.
Will it damage my concrete?
Usually not the way people think.
Most damage is not chemical. It is freeze-thaw. Melted water seeps into the concrete, refreezes overnight, and pops the surface off. Any product that makes water can do that.
What actually matters: concrete under a year old is the most at risk. Magnesium chloride is gentler than rock salt. And sweep up the leftover pellets instead of letting them sit and re-melt.
How much is too much?
Most crews put down two or three times what they need.
More pellets do not melt faster. They sit there, get tracked inside on boot treads, and eat your floor finish from the entryway back. Your winter ice melt bill and your spring refinishing bill are the same conversation.
Spread thin and even. Go back over it if you need to.
